Hinged Shower Screens Melbourne

Hinged shower screens for clean access and a frameless finish

Hinged shower screens are one of the cleanest and most practical options for modern bathrooms where there is enough room for a glass door to open comfortably.

Instead of sliding along a track, the glass door is supported by quality shower hinges, giving the bathroom a simple frameless look with direct entry into the shower area.

They are commonly used in ensuites, main bathrooms, corner shower layouts, wall-to-wall openings and renovations where a wider entry and minimal visible hardware are preferred.

As part of our frameless shower screen range, our hinged shower screens are custom measured after tiling and made to suit the finished opening, wall alignment, floor fall, hinge position, door swing clearance and hardware finish.

Hinged shower screens can be designed as a single glass door, a door with a fixed panel, a corner screen or a larger custom layout depending on the bathroom size and how the space is used every day.

Why Choose Hinged

When a hinged shower screen makes sense

Hinged shower screens are a great option when the bathroom has enough clear space for the glass door to open comfortably. They provide direct access into the shower, a clean frameless appearance and a simple everyday layout with less visual bulk than many framed or sliding systems.

01

Wide, direct entry

A hinged glass door opens in or out of the shower area, creating a comfortable entry without needing the door to slide behind another panel.

02

Clean frameless look

With no bulky frame and minimal hardware, a hinged shower screen keeps the bathroom looking open, modern and uncluttered.

03

Easier everyday cleaning

Hinged screens have no overlapping glass sections like sliding systems, making the glass edges, seals and floor area easier to access.

04

Custom made to suit the space

Each screen is measured after tiling so the glass, hinge position, clearances and hardware finish suit the finished bathroom layout.

Glass Options

Hinged shower screen glass options

Choose from clear, low iron or fluted glass depending on the look, privacy and finish you want for your hinged shower screen. Each glass option can be matched to the bathroom layout, tile selection, hinge finish and overall renovation style.

Hardware Finishes

Hinged shower screen hardware finishes

Hinged shower screens can be matched with different hardware finishes so the hinges, handle, brackets and fittings suit the rest of the bathroom design.

Whether your bathroom uses chrome, brushed nickel, brushed brass, gun metal or matte black finishes, we can help select hinged shower screen hardware that works with your tapware, tiles and overall bathroom style.

For hinged shower screens, hardware choice is especially important because the hinges carry the weight of the glass door during everyday use. The right hinge type, finish and fixing position are selected to suit the glass size, layout and door swing.

Custom Made To Order

Made to measure instead of forced into a standard size

Our hinged shower screens are made to measure, allowing the glass to be cut to suit the finished bathroom rather than relying on standard off-the-shelf panels.

Most walls and floors are slightly out of square, even when it is not obvious to the naked eye. Once a stock shower screen is installed, uneven gaps, awkward clearances and poor alignment can become much more noticeable.

Custom glass also allows us to finish the shower screen at the desired height, instead of being locked into common stock heights such as 2000mm or 2100mm. It also allows the door width, fixed panel size and hinge position to be designed around the actual opening.

We usually complete final measurements after waterproofing, wall tiling and floor tiling are finished. This allows the hinged screen to be made to suit the actual finished opening.

During the measure, we check the opening width, wall angles, floor fall, fixing locations, door swing clearance and handle position so the glass panels, hinges and brackets can be confirmed before manufacture.

This helps achieve cleaner gaps, better door movement, correct hinge placement and a neater finished result once the hinged shower screen is installed.

Hinged vs Sliding

Hinged shower screens vs sliding shower screens

Both hinged and sliding shower screens can look clean and modern, but they suit different bathroom layouts. The right choice usually comes down to available space, access width, door swing clearance and how the bathroom is used every day.

Best for simple open access

Hinged Shower Screens

Hinged shower screens are usually the cleaner option when there is enough clear space for the glass door to open comfortably.

  • Wider and more direct entry opening
  • Clean frameless appearance with minimal visible hardware
  • Less hardware than sliding systems
  • Often easier to clean because there is no glass overlap
  • Can open inwards, outwards or both ways depending on the hinge type and layout
  • Needs clear door swing space
  • May not suit tight layouts near vanities, toilets, baths or towel rails
Best for tighter layouts

Sliding Shower Screens

Sliding shower screens are a practical choice when there is limited room outside the shower for a door to swing open.

  • No outward door swing required
  • Good for ensuites, narrow bathrooms and compact layouts
  • Can suit wall-to-wall shower openings
  • Works well near vanities, toilets, baths and bathroom doors
  • Allows a bath mat to sit in front of the shower without blocking the door swing
  • Recommended minimum opening is usually around 1200mm
Simple rule: if the bathroom has enough door swing clearance, a hinged screen is usually the cleaner and more open option. If the shower entrance is close to a vanity, toilet, bath, towel rail or doorway, a sliding shower screen may be the more practical choice.

Screen
FAQs

Common questions about custom hinged shower screens, door swing clearance, glass thickness, hardware finishes and installation timing.

Are hinged shower screens a good option for my bathroom?

Hinged shower screens are a great option when there is enough clear space for the glass door to open comfortably. They provide a clean frameless look, direct entry into the shower and less visible hardware than many sliding or framed systems.

They usually suit ensuites, main bathrooms, corner shower layouts, in-line screens and wall-to-wall openings where the door swing will not clash with a vanity, toilet, bath, towel rail or doorway.

How much space does a hinged shower door need to open?

The required space depends on the door width, hinge type and bathroom layout. As a general guide, the area in front of the shower needs to stay clear enough for the glass door to swing without hitting nearby fixtures.

During the measure, we check the door swing clearance, handle position, towel rails, vanity position, toilet location and any nearby walls so the hinged screen can be made to suit the bathroom properly.

Can a hinged shower door open inwards and outwards?

In many layouts, hinged shower doors can be designed to open outwards, inwards, or both ways depending on the hinge type, seals, clearances and surrounding bathroom layout.

The final setup needs to be considered carefully so the door can operate safely and practically without clashing with tapware, towel rails, vanities, toilets or bath edges.

Do hinged shower screens leak?

Frameless hinged shower screens are designed to help contain water, but they are not completely watertight because small gaps are required for the glass door to operate.

We use appropriate clearances, seals and, where suitable, a small water bar to help direct water back into the shower area. Good floor fall, shower head position and the overall bathroom layout also make a big difference.

Are hinged shower screens easier to clean than sliding shower screens?

In many cases, yes. Hinged shower screens usually have no overlapping glass panels and no sliding track, which makes the glass edges, seals and floor area easier to access during cleaning.

Regular cleaning of the glass, seals and hinges will help keep the screen looking clear and operating properly. A Nano coating can also be added as an optional upgrade to make everyday cleaning easier.

What glass thickness is used for hinged shower screens?

We use 10mm toughened safety glass for frameless hinged shower screens. This gives the screen a strong, stable feel while keeping the clean frameless appearance.

Some layouts may need to be assessed based on door size, panel size, hinge type and fixing locations before manufacture.

Can I choose clear, low iron or fluted glass?

Yes. Hinged shower screens can usually be made using standard clear glass, low iron glass or fluted / reeded glass, depending on the look, privacy and finish you want.

Clear glass is the most common and cost-effective option. Low iron glass gives a brighter ultra-clear appearance, while fluted glass adds texture and privacy.

Can the hinges and hardware match my tapware?

Generally — yes. We offer a wide range of hardware finishes to help match popular bathroom tapware and accessories.

Common finishes include chrome, matte black, brushed brass and brushed nickel, along with gun metal and other specialty finishes. With over 20 finishes currently available, we can usually get very close to your selected tapware and bathroom accessories.

What hinged shower screen configurations can you make?

We can custom make several hinged shower screen configurations, including in-line wall-to-wall screens, doors hinged directly off the wall, corner configurations with hinged infill panels and fix and swing over-bath panels.

The best configuration depends on the finished opening size, wall alignment, door swing clearance, fixing points and how the bathroom is used every day.

When should a hinged shower screen be measured?

Final measurements should usually be taken after waterproofing, wall tiling and floor tiling are complete. This allows the glass to be made to suit the finished opening rather than relying on rough frame dimensions.

Measuring after tiling helps achieve cleaner gaps, better panel alignment, correct hinge placement and a neater finished result.

How long does it take to manufacture and install a hinged shower screen?

After final measurements are completed, manufacturing and installation is typically finished within 6–10 working days, depending on the layout, glass type and hardware finish.

Specialty glass, custom finishes or more complex configurations may take longer, so it is best to plan the shower screen measure as soon as the tiling is complete.

Are hinged shower screens suitable for small bathrooms?

Hinged shower screens can work well in some small bathrooms, but only if there is enough clear space for the door to open comfortably.

If the shower entrance is close to a vanity, toilet, bath, towel rail or doorway, a sliding shower screen or another layout may be more practical.
