Hinged Shower Screens Melbourne

Hinged shower screens for clean access and a frameless finish

Hinged shower screens are one of the cleanest and most practical options for bathrooms where there is enough room for a glass door to open comfortably.

Instead of sliding along a track, the glass door is supported by quality shower hinges, giving the bathroom direct entry with no bottom track and no overlapping glass panels to clean around.

They are commonly used in ensuites, main bathrooms, corner shower layouts, wall to wall openings and renovations where a wider entry and clean frameless glass are preferred.

As part of our frameless shower screen range, our hinged shower screens are custom measured after tiling and made to suit the finished opening, wall alignment, floor fall, hinge position, door swing clearance and hardware finish.

A hinged layout can be designed as a single glass door, a door with a fixed panel, a corner screen, a half wall layout or a larger custom screen depending on the bathroom size and how the space is used every day.

Why Choose Hinged

When a hinged shower screen makes sense

Hinged shower screens are usually the cleaner choice when the bathroom has enough door swing clearance. They give you direct access into the shower, no bottom track and no overlapping glass sections to clean around.

01

Wide, direct entry

A hinged glass door opens into or out of the shower area, giving you a comfortable entry without the door sliding behind another panel.

02

Easier everyday cleaning

Hinged screens have no overlapping glass sections like sliding systems, making the glass edges, seals and floor area easier to reach.

03

Clean frameless finish

With custom glass, neat hinges and no bulky frame, a hinged screen helps the bathroom feel lighter and less crowded.

04

Made to suit the finished space

Each screen is measured after tiling, so the glass, hinge position, door clearance and hardware finish suit the actual bathroom layout.

Hinged Screen Configurations

Hinged shower screen configurations we can custom make

Hinged shower screens can be made in different configurations depending on the bathroom layout, finished opening size, door swing clearance and where the hinges can be fixed. From simple wall hinged doors through to in line screens, corner layouts and half wall screens, each screen is measured and made to suit the space.

Half Wall Hinged Screens

Hinged shower screens on half walls

A hinged shower screen can work well with a half wall, but it needs more planning than a simple fixed panel. The door position, hinge side, glass gaps and finished tile surfaces all need to be considered before the screen is measured.

In some layouts, one hinge is fixed to the glass and the other hinge is fixed to the tiled half wall. This means the half wall needs to be suitable for fixing, and the finished tile face needs to line up properly with the glass and door.

Door swing clearance is also important. The shower door still needs enough room to open without hitting a vanity, toilet, bath, towel rail or nearby wall. If the half wall, fixed panel or opening is not planned properly, the door may technically fit but feel awkward to use.

For this reason, hinged screens on half walls are best discussed early in the renovation. A small change to the wall position, glass line or opening width can make the finished shower easier to use and cleaner to measure.

01

Hinge position

Hinges need to be placed so the door can operate smoothly and line up with the fixed glass, half wall and finished opening.

02

Half wall fixing

If a hinge is fixed to the half wall, the finished tiled surface and fixing point need to be suitable for the glass door.

03

Door swing clearance

The door needs enough room to open without clashing with nearby fixtures, walls, towel rails or bathroom doors.

Hardware Finishes

Hinged shower screen hardware finishes

The hardware finish can change how the whole hinged shower screen feels. Hinges, handles, brackets and fittings can be matched to your tapware, tiles and bathroom style so the finished screen looks intentional.

Whether your bathroom uses chrome, brushed nickel, brushed brass, gunmetal or matt black, we can help choose hardware that works with the rest of the room.

Hardware choice matters on hinged shower screens because the hinges carry the weight of the glass door during everyday use. The hinge type, finish and fixing position need to suit the glass size, layout and door swing.

Custom Made To Order

Made to measure instead of forced into a standard size

A made to measure hinged shower screen is built around the finished bathroom, not forced into the closest standard size. That means the glass, hinge position, fixed panel size and door swing can be planned around the actual tiled opening.

Most walls and floors are slightly out of square, even when it is not obvious at first glance. With a stock shower screen, uneven gaps, awkward clearances and poor alignment can become much more noticeable once the screen is installed.

Custom glass also gives more control over the finished height. Instead of being locked into common stock heights such as 2000mm or 2100mm, the screen can be made to suit the room, tile heights and overall bathroom design.

We usually complete final measurements after waterproofing, wall tiling and floor tiling are finished. This allows the hinged screen to be made to suit the actual finished opening, rather than working from rough building dimensions.

During the measure, we check the opening width, wall angles, floor fall, fixing locations, door swing clearance and handle position. This helps confirm the glass panels, hinges and brackets before manufacture.

The result is cleaner gaps, smoother door movement, correct hinge placement and a neater finished screen that suits the bathroom properly.

Hinged vs Sliding

Hinged shower screens vs sliding shower screens

Hinged and sliding shower screens can both look clean and modern, but they solve different layout problems. The right choice usually comes down to door swing clearance, entry width, nearby fixtures and how the bathroom is used every day.

Best for simple open access

Hinged Shower Screens

Hinged shower screens are usually the cleaner option when there is enough clear space for the glass door to open comfortably.

  • Wider and more direct entry opening
  • Clean frameless appearance
  • No bottom track
  • Often easier to clean because there is no glass overlap
  • Can open inwards, outwards or both ways depending on the hinge type and layout
  • Needs clear door swing space
  • May not suit tight layouts near vanities, toilets, baths or towel rails
Best for tighter layouts

Sliding Shower Screens

Sliding shower screens are a practical choice when there is limited room outside the shower for a door to swing open.

  • No outward door swing into the room
  • Useful for ensuites, narrow bathrooms and compact layouts
  • Can suit wall to wall shower openings
  • Works well near vanities, toilets, baths and bathroom doors
  • Allows a bath mat to sit in front of the shower without blocking the door
  • Recommended minimum opening is usually around 1200mm
Simple rule: if the bathroom has enough door swing clearance, a hinged screen is usually the cleaner and more open option. If the shower entrance is close to a vanity, toilet, bath, towel rail or doorway, a sliding shower screen may be the more practical choice.
Why Famous Frameless

Why choose Famous Frameless for hinged shower screens in Melbourne?

Hinged shower screens need more than just glass cut to size. The hinge position, door swing, glass weight, wall alignment, fixing points and clearances all need to work together for a clean, safe and practical result.

Glass sized to your actual finished opening

Your screen is measured after tiling, so the glass is made to suit the real bathroom opening instead of being packed out to fit a standard panel that was never quite right.

Clearance checked before manufacture

We check door swing clearance, hinge position, nearby fixtures and surrounding obstacles before the glass is made, so the screen fits properly the first time.

A finish that looks deliberate

We focus on accurate gaps, smooth door movement, correct hinge placement and silicone that looks neat, not like it is hiding a poor fit.

Installation Process

Installation of hinged shower screens

Hinged shower screens are measured after tiling is complete, so the glass sizes, hinge positions and door clearances suit the finished bathroom. Proper installation is what gives the screen clean alignment, smooth door movement and better water control.

We install across Melbourne west, north and inner Melbourne suburbs, with wall brackets or a wall channel chosen to suit the finished opening. Gaps and seals are set around the door swing, then the screen is checked from inside and outside the shower before we leave.

Screen
FAQs

Common questions about hinged shower screens, door swing clearance, glass thickness, hardware finishes and installation timing.

Are hinged shower screens a good option for my bathroom?

Yes, if your bathroom has enough door swing clearance, a hinged shower screen is usually one of the cleanest options. It gives you direct access into the shower, a frameless look and a simpler hardware setup than many sliding or framed screens.

Hinged screens usually suit ensuites, main bathrooms, corner shower layouts, in line screens and wall to wall openings where the door will not clash with a vanity, toilet, bath, towel rail or doorway.

How much space does a hinged shower door need to open?

The space needed depends on the door width, hinge type and bathroom layout. As a general guide, you usually need around 600 to 700mm of clear floor space in front of the door so it can open comfortably.

During the measure, we check the door swing, handle position, towel rails, vanity, toilet, nearby walls and any other tight points so the hinged screen can be made to suit the bathroom properly.

Can a hinged shower door open inwards and outwards?

In many layouts, hinged shower doors can be set up to open outwards, inwards or both ways, depending on the hinge type, seals, clearances and surrounding bathroom layout.

The final setup needs to be checked carefully so the door can swing freely without clipping the vanity, towel rail, toilet, tapware or bath edge.

Do hinged shower screens leak?

Frameless hinged shower screens are designed to help contain water, but they are not completely watertight because small gaps are needed for the glass door to operate.

We use suitable clearances, seals and, where needed, a small water bar to help direct water back into the shower area. Floor fall, shower head position and the overall bathroom layout also make a big difference.

Are hinged shower screens easier to clean than sliding shower screens?

In many cases, yes. Hinged shower screens usually have no overlapping glass panels and no sliding track, which makes the glass edges, seals and floor area easier to reach when cleaning.

Regular cleaning of the glass, seals and hinges will help keep the screen looking clear and operating properly. A Nano coating can also be added as an optional upgrade to make everyday cleaning easier.

What glass thickness is used for hinged shower screens?

We use 10mm toughened safety glass for frameless hinged shower screens. This gives the screen a strong, stable feel while keeping the clean frameless appearance.

For very large panels or unusual hinge configurations, we assess the layout before manufacture to make sure the glass, hinges and fixing points are suitable.

Can I choose clear, low iron or fluted glass?

Yes. Hinged shower screens can usually be made using standard clear glass, low iron glass or fluted or reeded glass, depending on the look, privacy and finish you want.

Clear glass is the most common and cost effective option. Low iron glass gives a clearer appearance, while fluted glass adds texture and privacy without blocking natural light.

Can the hinges and hardware match my tapware?

Generally, yes. We offer a wide range of hardware finishes to help match popular bathroom tapware and accessories.

Common finishes include chrome, matt black, brushed brass and brushed nickel, along with gunmetal and other specialty finishes. With over 20 finishes currently available, we can usually get very close to your selected tapware and bathroom accessories.

What hinged shower screen configurations can you make?

We can custom make several hinged shower screen configurations, including in line wall to wall screens, doors hinged directly from the wall, corner screens with hinged infill panels and fixed and swing over bath panels.

If you are not sure which configuration suits your bathroom, send through photos and measurements and we can work through the options with you.

When should a hinged shower screen be measured?

Final measurements should usually be taken after waterproofing, wall tiling and floor tiling are complete. This allows the glass to be made to suit the finished opening rather than rough frame dimensions.

Measuring after tiling helps achieve cleaner gaps, better panel alignment, correct hinge placement and a neater finished result.

How long does it take to manufacture and install a hinged shower screen?

After final measurements are completed, manufacturing and installation is typically finished within 6 to 10 working days, depending on the layout, glass type and hardware finish.

Specialty glass, custom finishes or more complex configurations may take longer, so it is best to plan the shower screen measure as soon as the tiling is complete.

Are hinged shower screens suitable for small bathrooms?

Hinged shower screens can work well in some small bathrooms, but only if there is enough clear space for the door to open comfortably.

If the shower entrance is close to a vanity, toilet, bath, towel rail or doorway, a sliding shower screen or another layout may be more practical.

Can a hinged shower screen be installed on a half wall?

Yes, a hinged shower screen can often be installed with a half wall, but it needs careful planning. In some layouts, one hinge may fix to glass and another hinge may fix to the tiled half wall, so the finished surfaces, hinge positions and door gaps need to be measured accurately.

The half wall also needs to be suitable for fixing, and there must be enough clearance for the door to open without hitting nearby fixtures, walls, towel rails or bathroom doors.

Should a half wall hinged shower screen be planned before tiling?

Yes. The half wall position, glass line, hinge side and door swing should ideally be planned before tiling is complete. These details can affect where the glass sits, where the hinge fixes, how the door opens and how the finished shower line works on the floor.

Early planning gives more control over the finished screen and helps avoid awkward compromises once the bathroom is complete.
